Does the US recognize foreign marriages?

My best friend was married overseas. Her husband has his US citizenship and she has her green card and has for a few years now so it is not an immigration issue. They both have been living and working legally in the US for 20 years. They just went to his home country of India to get married. Is the marriage legal in the US if it took place in India?

Yes the marriage is still legal, though as proof of marriage they will need to take their marriage cerificate to the court here and even to social security office and DMV. Tell them to carry their original with some extra copies just incase and of course their wedding pictures. They MIGHT have to get certified in U.S., but best for thing for them would be to be prepared with all needed documents.

If you have a valid official marriage certificate issued by the department responsible for such things, you should have no problem

Only the INS can answer that.There are countries where a marriage there is accepted in the U.S. and some countries American will not accept.Contact the INS for a complete rundown. if they cant help they should be able to point you in the right direction.
