Can people (government) listen in on your home phone calls?

would they really do something like i said that i know a person who has deportation on him over the phone ,would they actually trace the phone call and come knocking on my front door to question me ?

This has nothing to do with immigration, just an example.

Unlike what some people think, what usually happens for the government to tap your phone is this. They look at phone records that have frequent calls to countries that are questionable. Then they check other things like finances if things look suspicious then they usually ask a judge to give them permission to monitor calls from or too that person.So if you haven't been calling Iran or north Korea you should be fine.

In order to make us safer the government can do anything to us they want in the name of national security.

If you are a suspected terrorist, they can. It's all the hype between civil rights and national security. I do煤bt they would trace you down for that, but they may if you said you knew Osama bin-Laden and his cronies...and where they were.

Not only the government, but your local phone company does it all the time. As a former employee of a telecom company, I can assure you that this happens all the time....it's really good entertainment.
