The best plan for government? i think this has some good ideas do you?

my friend was telling me about a few ways to really get the u.s. on a good path again.

the first thing he said he would do is tax companies who move their factories overseas so much that it would cost more to produce just about anything overseas then it would here thus keeping jobs here.

the second thing he says he would do is in order for countries to trade with us they must comply with american wage standards.

a third thing he says he would do is instead of buying oil from a whole bunch of people for a hell of alot of money he would basically get the oil producing countries bidding against eachother for rights to sell oil to us and seeing how they cant not sell oil to us they would be forced to bid against eachother lowering the price of oil(for us)

a fourth thing he would do to combat illegal immigration (mainly with mexico) is he would send the mexican government money to try to improve the country itself so the mexicans would have no reason to come hee.

also he says if the congressmen opposed his plans he would oppenly state their names on national tv and give and explanation of them voting no and how this plan of action could benefit u.s. citizens

the best plan for government? i think this has some good ideas do you?

SOME

Everything before the part about Mexico is nonsense from an economic point of view:

1 - tax companies: sure, put a tariff on internal production. that is smart. Then the companies will just move offshore completely. and maybe or maybe not they will export the goods to the US. If so it will be at higher price because of the risk of doing business here.

2 - American wage standards: actually, some places ARE getting higher wages as the economy improves, and hence sending jobs there is less attractive. India and software is a good example. the market will take care of that.

I'd suggest that if Americans want to do a job that others are able and willing to do cheaper, that Americans reset their expectations. New job, new wages, or move to where they can do the job and make a decent living. Lots of Americans are headed to India for this reason, again in the software field. Same for China, Taiwan, Korea, and other places as well.

Or they could just do a better job of it and add more value - this is in fact what Americans are best at overall. better by far then anyone else in the whole world at driving productivity and innovation.

3 - Reverse oil market. there is plenty of demand in the world now, esp China and India, to pick up any slack should we drop out of the market. The market doesn't need us to buy oil. But we don't have enough of our own to call that bluff and everyone knows it.

OK, now to 4- Mexico

That is what we ARE doing worldwide by participating in economic globalization. Other companies trade with us, we trade with them, they get money, their lives improve, they like us, we don''t fight because our interests are too intertwined.

Historically grants to emerging nations in Africa and South America especially (but not only) have led to corruption in those markets. that was our policy for a long time. Now we prefer to interact directly. We SHOULD do what we can to develop Mexico's own economy - but then let's not do it by writing a check.

Of course the only alternative is trade, and that means they will do what they are best at, and until their economy is as strong and vibrant as ours, that means some things will be cheaper to do there then here, and well, you are back at square one.

Which is why trade with others while extending our own lead in innovation and productivity - our core strength - is the only way to go.
