Where do you stand?Family vs. Ethics ? |
Jim, a 56-year old middle manager with children in college, discovers that the owners of his company are cheating the government of several thousands dollars a year in taxes. He is the only employee in a position to know this. Should Jim report the owners to the Internal Revenue Service at the risk of endangering his own livelihood or should he disregard the discovery to protect his family鈥檚 livelihood? How is Jim's family going to fare when, after deciding not to report the company to the IRS, and the company is later busted and it is determined that Jim knew and did nothing -- he could then be prosecuted along with the others for collusion and/or accessory during and after the fact. The whole point of a question like this is to show that moral decisions are not always easy. Even if you are a true moralist and believe that morality should rule your life, there are times when the best you can do is to pick the least bad of bad choices. Family comes first. Jim is at risk of being an accomplice if he does not report it. |
