It's not a real family - it's a cult led by a madman.

The cult broke into Sharon Tate's house ( she was an actress) and tortured and killed her and I think a few other people in the house that happened to be there).

Sharon was pregnant at the time, if I remember correctly.

There was blood everywhere.

They(his Followers) tried to create race riots,between the Whites and Blacks,By Killing The people in the Houses of La Bianca and Sharon Tate.They used the blood from the victims to spell derogatory words(like Pigs die!) and other words to make it look like the murders were done by blacks.During this time,their had been uprising in the Black community from the fallout of equal rights,the deaths of Kennedy and Martin Luther King,The Black Panthers etc,And Charles Manson decided he would capitalize on this issue hoping to incite a race war.
