Grandma in nursing home. Problems with relatives harassing my sister and i for information on gifts.?

My aunts and uncle have recently put my grandparents in a nursing home and they are now selling everything they own and being very nasty to my dad, my sister and I. My sister and I are extremely close to them and they've done a lot for us over the years. My aunt is harassing my sister saying that they want documentation on everything my grandparents gave us over the past 5 years, thinking we have the bulk of their estate. We don't, I have some old dishes, wall hangings and they gave me a car long ago, which i paid them for. My sister got a motor home that is worth $2000.

I am wondering if I should get a lawyer to protect us..my uncle sent a very nasty email to my dad saying he was going to kick his a** and blah blah blah.

I'm so upset I can't think and they aren't even dead yet, yet the vultures are swarming.

Should I get a lawyer? Anyone know of where I can start? Anyone ever go through something similar? I live in Minnesota. They are in Fairmont and I live in Saint Paul.

When I say close to them...i meant close to my grandparents. I called them every day, much more so than any of their children too. My grandma is like my best friend and its hard to see her like this.

Is there a law in MN that says they can give away up to $3,000 a month without penalty when dealing with Medicare/Medical Assistance in Minnesota?

I'm very upset that they care more about property than their own parent's welfare in the nursing home. My grandfather has slipped 3 times and fallen and my grandmother is now in the hospital with pneumonia.

Minnesota has "elder abuse" laws to protect seniors from relatives who are abusing their powers of attorney. Your Dad should see a lawyer who specializes in elder law.

When my grandmother got ill - we were going to have to put her in a nursing home. The nursing home wanted to know all the information about her finances for the past 5 years. They wanted to know about everything she owned and gave as gifts too, TVs, cars, everything. Maybe your aunts & uncle are just in a position where they have to give this information to the nursing home and are just not handleing it very well. I personally would not get too worried about it. If she has signed the titles over to you and your sister on the car and the motor home, don't worry about it - They is now yours. And as far as the dishes and wall hangings, they are in your possession. I would not contact a lawyer until you hear something from uncle or aunts that they are threatening a lawsuit. I doubt they would go that far over dishes.

Well they are probably doing it because of the nursing home costs.

I would write up a list of what you were given (not the car, since you paid for it) and since it looks like you haven't gotten anything valuable I would leave it at that and get a lawyer if they want to push it.

As for your sister and father, I don't know.
