I received an "adjusted electric bill" for nearly $2,000 for a faulty meter, they installed new meter...
Due to economy...my job in real estate declined. I was conserving inside my home....thinking this was why my electric bill was low. I cannot afford this bill. I am starting on Social Security...What can I do for help?? The bill states "meter was not functioning properly, and as a result, was not recording all of the electricity being consumed at my address. The electric company stated " In order to corrrect this situation we installed a new meter....here is your adjusted bill!!!!" I thought it was due to my inside conserving methods that my bill was low. Can you advise me, what I need to do...
Thank you in advance

I'd get a lawyer to help you. If the meter was broken, they cannot know what you spent. They took a neighborhood average, or something.

I wouldn't pay unless they can account for how they came up with that amount, and know for certain when the meter wasn't working. That's where a lawyer can help.

If you were in Connecticut , I would tell you to call the local newspaper and the local tv stations ... we have consumer advocates here who will help you out and tell you if you have a good case ...The electric company here has been giving some people exorbitant bills and claiming that their meters are never wrong .. They've finally had to start replacing meters ... due to bad publicity

Call the electric company. They should be able to help you. Maybe break it up into small payments. I think maybe they can also take some off of it if you ask them to. I hope you don't have to pay the whole amount, that is just awful. I wish you luck.

Unless they can prove how much electricity you used, they can't charge you for it - take it to court.
