Inventory for estate how detailed should this be and what is the inventory used for?

I am the executrix of my father's estate and I know I have to give my attorney the inventory list. How detailed do I have to be? Why do they need that information? I am afraid I will do it wrong so I need to know what this is for.

I mostly just am curious as to why an inventory is needed at all.

Your probate clerk should have a handout detailing what you have to include. Pretty much anything with a value of $100 in most states. Jewelry, vehicles, bank assets, stocks, bonds, collectable items.
