Question on environmental issue....?

Should industry officials be held responsible for dumping chemicals that were legal when they did it but are now known to be extremely dangerous? at what point can we argue that they should have known about the hazard involved?

Yes , whatever form of dumping is irresponsible . They should know more about the chemicals before they use it .Government allowing this should also be partly responsible .

Industry is responsible for the safety of their operations. It doesn't matter if it was legal when they did it. They either knew that it was dangerous or, if they didn't, they should have researched it and made sure it was safe. If they failed to do their homework, they are responsible for the consequences.

The ill effects are caused whether directly or indirectly by the industry, affects the environment, are responsible for the effects of hazardous nature.

Of course they should....look up Love Canal.

Depends on if the method of "dumping" was done with due diligence.

Most chemical products of the type you are probably concerned with have always been regarded as "hazardous", whether they were legal or not.
