What do lawyers for music and entertainment?

do exactly?

Well, music and entertainment can involve some high stakes contracts, so a lawyer can negotiate contracts and help guide the people bound by the contract into comfortably complying with it to stay out of trouble.

Lately, there is a large ugly field of enforcing restrictions on intellectual property. Debating and arguing what constitutes fair use and what is infringement. The RIAA keeps plenty of lawyers well-employed.

As potentially high income independent business people, muscians and entertainers may also need a lawyer that can give advice on how to structure their affairs to minimize the impact of taxes. (That's 1 for you and 19 for me. I'm the tax man, oh, the tax man). Young muscians and entertainers typically aren't thinking ahead to after the hits stop, so sound financial planning advice is a good thing that they might hope for from their trusted attorney. If there are children involved, I would hope the attorney will make sure they have an appropriate will too.

And wealthy high profile clients are a magnet for civil suits, so a lawyer to muscians and entertainers should be prepared to handle more law suits than a typical person would expect for themselves. And depending on the behavior of their clients, there may be criminal charges to defend against too. (That wasn't my gun. It belonged to my driver).

Personally, I like listening to jazz, going to the movies, and reading contemporary fiction. Oh. Wait. Maybe that's not what you were asking.

It depends on which part of the industry they work in. Working out contracts and protecting the intellectual property right of their clients are probably the most important aspects of their jobs.

There are a number of bands made up of lawyers in the UK, some quite successful. Me, I am talentless and listen to others!
