I have a stage name that I want to legally copywrite/trademark. What is the process of doing that?

I go by an alternate stage name that I do for my entertainment work. Is it possible to trademark or copywrite my name so that no one is allowed to use that name? For example, the name of Madonna or Cher or P.Diddy. Is there a legal way to find out if someone has my stage name and how can I protect it from some else using it (if its possible).

When you join
Actor's Equity Association, you pick the stage name you want to use....if it's available, it's yours, no charge, other than the initiation fee and regular dues......

Neither copyright nor trademark can be used for names, if I'm not mistaken. (I'm not a lawyer.)

When you register with the Screen Actors Guild and get that SAG card, no one else can register under the name you use. I'm guessing the same is true with Actors Equity for stage work.

I'm not a performer, so I don't know what qualifications you need to join either organization.

Trademarks are used on names. They cost about 3k per year (when last I looked), and can be tricky to set up. If your stage name is worth at least that however, it might be worth doing. More information on trademarks including forms and requirements is available at uspto.gov (the trademark and patent office).
