Something happened to me in high school, will it interfere with my employment? |
In September, I will be a high school senior, but my freshman year was not the best. One day, freshman year, this girl in the locker room was going ballistic because she couldn't find her purse. Everyone looked through their bags to see if they had it and what do you know...it was in my backpack. I honestly had no idea how it got there but I didn't immediately yell out "Hey there, I have your purse!" because I didnt want everyone else in the locker room to think I stole it! So I waited until everyone moved on to their Period 3 classes and then went to one of the gym teachers and told her that I had found it in my purse and the person who stole it might have chickened out and put it in my backpack. My friends stuck by me and defended me because I was with them the whole gym period and never went into the locker room alone. And yet my honesty got me a Saturday detention for "posession of stolen property". I'm 17 and i've been applying for parttime jobs at shoprite, kmart, ben&jerry's etc and have never even been called in for an interview, let alone been hired. so what I'm wondering is, if it is possible for the employers to look through my school records and see that i was in trouble in the 9th grade, even if the police were never involved. Sorry this got so long, thank you for reading. Your school records are not available for a potential employer to look at. This incident will not affect your future. It would be illegal; for your school to make your records public or to show them to anyone without your consent and/or a court order. Since the police was not involved in your case and the school punished you with detention, then there is not any criminal record on you. Also, the employer you applied at can not check your back ground unless you sign an authorization form, which is filled out before you get hired and after your interview if the interviewer decides to go ahead and process you for hiring. Checking your background is a paid service provided for the employer, and most likely the employer will not use the service unless they are interested in hiring you. |
