I was recently laid off at work.?

I was offered a severance package in return for my agreement to a voluntary resignation from employment and a general release of claims form. If I sign this agreement, will it make me ineligible to claim Unemployment Insurance? **Im in California**

The severance package itself is irrelevant. The important factor here is signing the resignation. Resignation means that you are essentially quitting your job. If you quit, you are not eligible for unemployment insurance. That is reserved for people who are fired or laid off.
Now you are in the position of choosing Door #1 or Door #2. You should sit down and calculate what you get from unemployment insurance versus what you get from the severance package. You will need to choose one or the other. Choose wisely young grasshopper.

I'd tread this road carefully. Is the severance package enough to get you through a few months to find a new job? Are there jobs, in your field, in your area? Would you have to move to find a job? Find out how much you'd get in unemployment insurance and how long would you qualify for it? Good luck to you....you are not alone!

Usually it will make you ineligible. Usually this kind of severance deal is not in your benefit. Weigh it carefully.
