How much would you sue if a company discriminated against you and you lost everything? |
I use to work for this company but they discriminated against me by not providing an accommodation. I needed screen enlargement software because I am legaly blind and I requested many times for the accommodation even during the interview and they said I would have it on the first day of training but the company never followed through with it even though they promised they would. I wasn't able to do my job and it led me to ultimately quit because I couldn't perform the job. After I left then I couldn't find employment and as a result I lost my home, savings, and my grandfather died during that time. I am so angry and I have a case against them but I am wondering how much would you sue if a company did this to you? They promised to accommodate me but never did and I requested again and again but they never made the accommodation. How much would you sue for? If what you describe is accurate, your civil rights may have been violated. The company is going to argue, however, that they were in the process of accommodating you when you quit. As long as they were paying you and not penalizing you for being unable to do your job, you were not discriminated against. If you were harassed for being unable to do your work, that's another story. I thought you said yesterday that you lost your job because you wanted to go to your grandfather's funeral and the company said no? 1) It sounds like a ADA violation. But since you quit, I don't see their fault. I doubt you have a case that would even make it to court. You can sue. Normally there's no limit unless there is a law limiting a judgment. Any time you sue, you try to get all you can get. The Judge will tell you what you are due in the end. Did you get it in writing? It's your word against theirs. when you sue, you bear the burdon of proof. i would be concerned with proving my reasons for quitting. it might be hard to prove that the company absolutely "would not" accomodate your needs, even though they "promised" they would. |
