Legal options concerning rumors about me at former place of employment?

I worked for a company for one and a half years. Never had an issue, never a problem. I was and am still on very good terms with most everyone there. I became involved with anoter employee during that time and then we broke up. I quit that job in early March for many reasons, none concerning her.
I have since found out there are rumors going around about me hitting her, among other things. Rumors happen, I get that, especially at a place like that. 12 hour shifts foster all kind of resentment for eachother and you've got nothing to do but talk badly about coworkers. It's a fact of life at that company.
I do not think that beating women is a very appropriate rumor however, that can have other ramifications and it's completely untrue.
She has a history of trying to get people in trouble about rumors/lies/sexual harassment, that kind of thing. I talked to an assistant crew leader already and I plan on talking to others, what else can I do to take care of this?

It actually harmed me when I recently met a girl and asked her friend who worked at that place about me. He told her that I was dumped for hitting the girl at that job. Simply not true. So it is having potentiall damaging effects.

For one, you are no longer employed at the job. Plus, what "harm" has this caused you? If none, then you have no legal action.

EDIT:

That is not considered "Harm". Harm would be something that is preventing you from getting a loan, job, etc. Not a girlfriend. Why did you just explain it to her as you did on Yahoo?
