Would you cross a picket line or support the union?

DETROIT -- American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc., idled for more than a month by a United Auto Workers strike, advertised in Sunday newspapers for potential replacement workers.

An ad published in the classified section of The Oakland Press of Pontiac read in part: "Employment offered to applicants responding to this advertisement will be to fill anticipated attrition replacement openings after negotiations or in place of employees involved in this strike."

The UAW responded by calling for a mass picket Monday outside the auto supplier's Detroit headquarters.

It it came down to me buying food, shelter, or clothing for my family or honoring a picket line, my family wins. Otherwise, I'd probably honor the picket line. The final decision would be based on what they were striking about. If it is for some absurd reason, then I probably wouldn't honor it at all.

I have not and will never
cross a union picket line!

I and my pregnant wife went into a casino in Las Vegas years ago, by driving into the parking ramp at the rear and entering through a back door from the ramp. After we gambled for a few hours, we went out through the front door.

As we came out, we saw the picket line and we had to cross it to get out of the casino. My wife was insulted greatly, being called a fat cow and etc. I told the guys if they wish to picket, they need to picket ALL of the entrances, including the parking ramp. They did not like that and further insulted us.

I called the union HQ the next day to complain and I got even more insults.

If they are going to act like animals and snarl at everyone, I am going to treat them like animals and ignore them. And that includes ignoring their picket lines, their complaints and their strikes.

You didn't say in your question the company wants workers to take a 50% wage cut while the executives get a 10% raise and the company has been making money.Good luck to you and husband Diane, hope everything works out for all the uaw members up there.

My husband works at the axle. He works hard and is semi- skilled. They are striking because a dick dauch, a man who makes 9 million a year wants to cut wages in half. Anyone who interferes with a mans livelihood is a non-ethical scab. And when they are done with you scab, you will be out on the street. You may start at 14 dollars an hour, but they can cut that at any time. no union for scabs, and benefits start 8 months for new hires good luck. At this wage I hope you are living in your parents basement, because that is all you will be able to afford. These guys are not just fighting for the axle, but every plant around to get a decent wage. pretty soon there will be no middle class, just the very rich, and the very poor. thanks terry, we will walk the line until next christmas if necessary. SOLIDARITY.

It would depend on what they are striking for. I'm generally don't support unions, but if they were striking fro a good reason, I would honor the picket line. Otherwise, if I was unemployed and needed the money, I would do it.

I would not take a job as a "Scab" under any circumstances.
That is what is in discussion there; not just crossing a picket line, but helping put union workers out of jobs.

Cross it in a heart beat. I grew up in Detroit. The unions have killed that city.

I'd cross it in half a heartbeat. Ive got a family to feed, clothe and provide shelter for.

I would cross any picket line anywhere with a smile on my face. This is what all companies should do when their entitled union crybabies walk out, get the ad in the paper.

I can't say but I could use a vacation.

I would support the Union.

Looking at the facts:

- Workers don't want to work

- Company looks to find new workers

I don't see the problem with the company filling the vacancies. If they can easily find replacement workers, then the striking employees must have been expecting more than they deserve. If they can't find applicants for the jobs, then it proves that the strike was justified in order to bring job pay/benefits in line.

I would definitely cross the picket line. I think unions just promote mediocrity at best. I do not think union leaders always have the company's future at heart when they demand things the company simply cannot afford to give.
I would go to work and enjoy putting food on the table for my family.

In my area the Teacher's Union have just about destroyed the public school system. Our real estate taxes are so high and the children are falling behind on almost every level. Yet each year the teachers demand to be paid more and without even paying towards health care premiums like the rest of us that have to pay their salaries.

No doubt about it. Cross it in a heartbeat. Unions were good when they first came about, but with the various agencies to watch over the plants, they are outdated.

It would depend upon whether or not the workers have seen their contract and whether or not the Union has done anything for the workers. There is so much corruption associated with not only the Unions but the Employers who use the unions as scapegoats to promote hiring illegal immigrants at lower wages, that we, the people, need to take action to ensure that the laws are enfoced and that our rights are protected.
