EmploymentVerification.......h... can i do it legally?

Im having some problems with my ex husband and i have been givin the run around from everyone so i am building my own case. Thing is that i do not have alot of money to invest in this and i dont know how legal or illegal it is to do such a thing. Can someone please help me on what i can do to get employment verification.
I live in arkansas
i do have his ss# actually i have a lot of information on him but this is the piece i NEED. So can someone help guide me?
