Just curious if anyone has ever skipped jury duty despite the penalties.?

I am working as a temp through an employment agency. I have no sick days, no vacation days and no health care. I do not get paid for any days I dont work so even if I report to court the first day, I lose money. I sent in an explanation of this when I first got the summons but got a response back from them saying it was denied. I am so mad. I am a single mom with an 8yr old that goes to day care. I dont see how that can not be grounds for an excuse!!

Good luck!

Most of the time people are dismissed for reasons that have to do with physical disabilities. Or other situations such as being the primary caregiver to a spouse or parent with Alzheimer's or perhaps for a disabled child.

In your case, although you feel it is unfair, I would advise that you bite the bullet. Since you are a citizen, go ahead and do your civic duty. Dress in a casual business attire and show up on time. Act as if you are interested in the process. If they give you another opportunity to opt out, tell them honestly what your situation is. But do so with a good attitude, one that says, "Yes, this is a hardship for me, however, I am willing to do my duty if required".

I actually have seen people dismissed for similar situations as yours, but only after they have at least made the effort to show up. Even if you are not dismissed for cause, odds are in your favor that you will not be chosen. I have been called for jury duty six times in my life. I have never been chosen.
