Employment verification question?

I worked for company A for 1 1/2 year. I recently applied for company B and got pre hired pending a drug and background screening. I passed my drug screening and now they are doing a background check on me. They recently called my boss to check if I am currently employed for company A. My current boss now asked me about the employment verification call he had days ago. He asked me if i was applying for a credit card or a loan or maybe another job. I didn't want him to know I was applying for another job so I said I was applying for a loan.

My question is would the person calling to verify my employment tell my boss that I was applying for company B, or is do they hush about that and just ask if I am working for company A? How does that work? What do the people verifying employment ask about?

All your current employer can tell them is that you work there. If the prospective employer had told the present one why he was calling, your boss would not have had to ask you.

Your boss may not have had a reason to fire you before, but now since you lied to him, he would be within his rights if he finds out.

Your prospective employer must identify to your current employer why he is requesting information.

Someone can't just call up any old company and start getting employee information without a reason.

If you were trying to hide your future job change, you have been unsuccessful.....
