What is a employment contract?


what is a legal and binding employment contract? I signed a document titled "employment offer" that included a requested start date, requested acceptence date, and also inluded salary and benefits information. Will there be any legal repercussions to follow if I don't start job?

The terms should be spelled out in the letter. If it is an offer to be an at-will employee then you can change your mind at any time.

Doubt it.

Even with an "offer" as you received, many copamnies have a policiy that either party can terminate the employment at any time. And I really dont think a company is going to spend the money to sue you in court unless you are really worth big bucks.

You signed it, you start it. Hope it's unionized.

If the company spent any money to be ready for your employment, and you do not show up, they can ask to be repaid, but this is not normal.

it is of course bad practice to do such, if you do it often, and are in a smaller industry, word of this can hurt you, since you are breaking your word to go to work for someone.

If you really have to breech your agreement with this company, you should try discussing it with the human relations department.

If there are extenuating circumstances beyond your control that will not allow you to follow through, I'm sure they would understand.

no it is more to spell out the the pay and benifits you will recieve as pay, if you don't want the job call them and tell them you got a diffrent job so they don't wait for you and can call the next person on the list, i hire and fire 100 to 300 people per year
