I have been told that my job title and terms of employment are changing do I have any rights? |
I have been employed since 2001 as a Personal Assistant to the Manager of a UK charity (paid) but have now been told without warning that my roIe will now be an Administrator and my duties will be different. I was not given any warning about this even though the staff handbook says I should have been given notice. Some duties have been taken off me and others have been added. If I do not accept the changes to my terms and conditions of employment, including the change of job title, from Personal Assistant to Administrator, could you please advise on whether I have the choice, therefore, to be made redundant or if the situation warrants a grievance? I have been left to feel demoralised as I feel that the job title change means that I have been demoted. Th staff handbook states "that changes cannot be made to an employee鈥檚 terms and conditions of employment without sufficient notice". This was not the case as I was told the changes were to take effect immediately. I am in the UK. I have a contract that states my job title and duties. Your staff handbook is a guide, and has no legal bearing. I agree with Trooper. Most jobs have handbooks but they are a guide and not set in stone. Do you have a written contract with these stipulations in it? Only choice I see, is staying or leaving. Trooper is correct. There are no guarantees. If you do not belong to a union then filing a grievance is a waste of time. However you do have a choice -- you can either accept the new duties or you are perfectly free to quit your job. Company policies are written by the company and they can change or edit them whenever they want, to suit their own needs, not yours. I always referred to policy handbooks as some of the best work of fiction I've ever read! |
