In canada- if your boss gives you a record of employment, does that mean you no longer work for him?

I will be going on sick leave, so to qualify for EI benefits I need a record of employment. Does that mean I am effectively laid off work?

No ...my husband had to go on sick leave for a few months .It does not mean you are laid off ...some smaller companies do not have their own sick benefits so it is doen through EI benefits (government) others are larger so they have their own sick pay . YOU are NOT considered laid off ....it is not for the same reason ...sick is different than a company downsizing
