Employment reference contacts?

I had an interview recently for a R&D position in a company and during that time, one of the two interviewers asked for references. I provided them with some, immediately the day after interview.Later, I was told that the references have been forwarded to the interviewer who will decide on the job offer. Also, the decision would be delayed, as other candidates are going to be interviewed. I had an impression that I may be made the offer.
Now, after few months, I have been asked for a second interview ,and this time, the interviewer ( supposed to take the decision ) has again asked for reference contacts. Here also, before going for the second interview, I have provided the same references but with a new addition.

Can anybody please throw some light on the consequences and possibility of the job offer to me? Also, the motive of the interviewers and the company as a whole. These may help me a lot in dealing with the interview process in a positive and successful manner. Thank you.

Don't read too much into it. They just want to make sure you are going to give the same references. Going to two interviews is normal. Some even have 3 or 4 interviews. Just make sure that you sent them a "Thank you" email and a "Follow Up" email in about a week.
