Arizona employment/labor law?


simple question, does it state anywhere that employees get breaks after a period of work time? if so how long? and how often?
PS: i googled it but couldn't find

Employers are not required to give you a break in Arizona.

Here's the deal ... IF a break is given and you are required to clock out, then this must be un-interupted time away from the work area. The requirement is 20 minutes; most companies give 30 minutes. This means that if you take a lunch break and you clock out for lunch, then you can not be pulled off of your lunch to help a customer, etc.

A lot of positions don't get a 'designated' lunch break .. In this case, the employer can not deduct the 30 minutes from your pay. For example, Police officer, health care worker, hotel front desk, etc.

Check on www.dol.gov The US Department of Labor has a section showing what (if any) each state requires for breaks and/or lunches. Most state do not require "coffee" breaks, however if they do allow them, they MUST be paid. Lunch breaks are not required by federal law, and most states don't require them either. Unlike "coffee" breaks, lunch breaks can be unpaid if you are not required to do any work during the break.

Unfortunately, Arizona does not have any meal & break period laws on the books. However, Federal law does offer the following mandate regarding wages to be paid.

Short breaks, those that are usually 20 minutes or less, should be counted as hours worked. True 鈥渕eal periods鈥?are usually 30 minutes or more, and do not need to be paid as work time. For this to be the case, however, the worker must be completely relieved of his or her duties during the meal break. If the employee is still required to do any duties (even minor or occasional tasks), it can鈥檛 be considered a meal or lunch period and must be paid.

I'm actually shocked. I thought Arizona would have some type of law (better than New York) regarding Breaks & Meal periods. You must have a real jerk of a boss if you need to ask this question. Incredible how some employer's couldn't care less if there employee's eat. Ugh.
