Was the 鈥渆mployment at will鈥?doctrine was originally created by statute.?

?

no. it was a natural common law development that arose in an effort to halt indentured servitude. That is, the employee became free to quit at any time. Naturally, that had to be reciprocal. Of course, any employee and and employer are free to overcome the doctrine by simply agreeing to a contract for a definite term. However, in contract law, a contract for an indefinite term, means it is terminable by either party at any time
