Question on employment law!?

How often are you entitled to a break, i work 12 hour shifts?

by law how often are you entitled to a break?
i work 12 hour shifts! u.k

This falls under the working time regulations. Check the Department for Trade and Industry website for further details.

The basic law states that you are entitled to 20 minutes rest break if you are working 6 hours or more in a block (need not necessarily be paid). The rest depends very much on your contract terms.

Look on the citizens' advice bureau web site. I remember finding the info there ages ago.

It probably will be less than you expect.

after 5 hours you get half an hour nfor lunch other than that i am not sure coffee breaks are not in the law

You should have a meal break of at least 1/2 hour, and at least 2 10 minutes breaks at minimum. Some states and corporations are more generous, when I worked 12 hour days in a store, I got the 1/2 hour lunch and 2 20 minute breaks.

Depends on your age , in some states. so check with your local employment office for rules and regulations. Most of them have a web sight.

I worked 12hr shifts before and was entitled to an hour and a half paid break.

But that is in the UK. Don't know where you are so can't help you...

In Texas, for a 6 hour shift you are required one 15 min. break. For an 8 hour shift you are required 2 15min. breaks and a 1/2 hour lunch. I guess for a 12 hour shift you are required 2 breaks and at least an hour lunch. If you are not from Texas, contact your state's unemployment commission.

Where I work, we are union, and our contract states you are entitled to a 30 minute lunch break and 2 15 minute breaks in a 12 hour shift. I would advise you to check with the Personnel office where you work to see if they have the lunch/break schedule IN WRITING. Most employers have an employee handbook which should tell you your rights.
