Genetic Data and Employment?

1. Where it's legal, do you think it's ethical for employers to engage in genetic teseing with the intent to screen for diseases or potential diseases?

2. Is it permissible to use a blood test to perform genetic testing on employees without their consent?

3. Is it permissible if the genetic information is reasonably related to specific job performance?

1. no, it may lead to people being unable to find appropriate or any form of work at all, due to the fact that they are more likely than most to get a certain illness.
2. it is unacceptable to perform genetic testing on people without their consent. what if these people don't want to know if there is anything wrong with them, or what if this would leave them unable to find employment, or health insurance or anything. it's an invasion of their privacy.
3. if they have a disease currently that reduces their ability to perform at work, they should already be asked to leave on health grounds, or take some time out. but screening people for what they may develop in the future will mean that people who may never even get the disease they have a genetic disposition to develop are left being discriminated against by employers, insurers etc. etc.

This sounds like the movie Gattaca.

I am unaware that that happens anywhere. AsI dont think geneticists really have enough data to really be able to solidly identify those things... yet. Its not far though.

I would guess the more immediate fear is with insurance though than employer screening.
