Whats in an employment background check?

I'm only 18, and never got in trouble with the law. Can there be anything in my background check that is stopping me from being hired?
And who puts information on these checks?
Does any kind of watch list show up?
I fear I may be on a watch list due to some anti-war articles I had published in a local newspaper.

Generally when a company says they will do a back ground check, they mean a credit check and to check references from previous jobs.

If a government organization does a back ground check or some companies doing work for the government, then they will also search the law enforcement data base to see if you have been arrested before.

But regular companies, have no way to access that law enforement data base.
