How long does a will stay open before one cannot make a claim?

My family left to live in South Africa at the turn of the last century.
My grandmother who's surname was Elder-Kelly (married Hawkins) always told us that she was an heir to the Elder Dempster shipping people but because she was so far away she missed out as she never knew that the relation had died.
Is it possible that this wil is still open?

I live in the UK.
The shipping line i believe opperated from Liverpool.
I would think that the will lodged in Liverpool or Ireland

yes it could be- u need to find out from probate court in your town or county

While it's possible, it's highly unlikely.

In the jurisdiction of most states, there is a one to two year statute of limitations for claims against the estate which is probated at the close of probate.

If the heirs are not found or a claim is not provided in that time, it expires.
