Do you think there would be public outcry if at the end of job ads it said "white guys are encouraged to apply

however we tolerate "women and minorities are encouraged to apply." why? is it because it can be statistically proven that women and minorities have lower education levels and lower income levels? is it becasue they were legally discriminated against in the past? The law may prescribe it, but morally why do we tolerate it as a country? We say we believe in equality, right? Why should I as a white male have to deal with that when I apply for a job when I have nothing to do with the fact that black people have lower incomes as a whole than my race or that women coulden't vote until the 1920s and the government feels the need to make up for that now by "encouraging" all classes of people to apply for that particular job except one- my class. I wasn't even alive the days when women and minorities were politically discriminated against.

They are currently being politically discriminated against, but you don't see it because it doesn't affect you.

They need more diversity, to have a representative sample of the population in the workforce.

Yes, there would be! It's funny how you point out that it's ok to list "women" and "minorities" but not "white." Does it make you racist? No, but somehow our society would be outraged if that happened. I think this comes from history-whites enslaved blacks and women had fewer rights until recently. I wish I had a better answer but frankly I don't. I like you, was not alive when all these things happened, but I am reminded of them all the time by people who can't let go...

It wasn't really THAT long ago, when you think about how long society has been around for, that women and blacks (not to mention other races) did not have equal rights. Being not that long ago, workplaces are still trying to diversify to encourage more equal rights.

By things like Equal Opportunity, it is not that unfair advantages are made for minorities-- it's that they're equaling the playing field. The same thing goes for women.

You have to understand that white, anglo-saxon men have ruled the country for so long and it's very hard for society to escape from that norm. We're doing the best we can, dude! Not everyone can be pleased. Even with equal opportunity, blacks and women still have a really hard time getting the same jobs that white men can. Without equal opportunity, we wouldn't be making much progress at all.
