What is your opinion of the education that kids are receiving today?

Here are letters that were written by Lincoln West High School students from Cleveland, OH.

The letters are about Mittal Steel causing more air-pollution than the EPA allows. What surprised me the most was the letters that they wrote. The letters are horrible at best. One kid said, "I am 14." I am going to take a guess and say that they are in the ninth grade.

I am a little worried after reading these. I understand that this is a small percentage of all ninth graders in the country, but obviously the school district said, "that is good enough."

I was not sure where to put this question, but ethics seems like a good fit.

What strikes me about these letters is that they appear to be written for a class assignment where they were taught that a local business is polluting and apparently were encouraged to write letters to this company. I question whether it is appropriate for a school to be encouraging students to write letters expressing an opinion that they were fed in school.

As for the letters themselves, they appear to be written at a level (grammar, spelling, analytically) to be expected of a typical 14-year old. If that's what you mean by "horrible," then I don't agree. The content of the letters, however, is what concerns me.
