Copy right?

I am doing a year 11 Film and Tv Studies video assessment task and in it I have a scene with the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. My teacher has said that we must ask permission to whoever has copyright on the song to use it for education purposes. Any idea who i'd contact/talk t about that?

Although you don't say where in the world you live, I'm assuming you live in Australia (as I've limited questions to Oz), and you refer to Yr11 Film & TV. If so, you are exempt from seeking copyright permission under s.28 of the Copyright Act 1968 - see http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/c...

The exemption is stated in s.28(1)(b), as modified by s.28(4) - as long as you are playing the sound recording "in the course of receiving" educational instruction (and also not playing it to a wider audience who pay to see it), you are deemed not to be playing the sound recording in public. In other words, you do not need to ask for permission from the holder of the copyright on the song.

I suggest you print the section out and show it to your teacher and whoever else you need to so that they let you use the song. By the time you track down the owner of the copyright and get their permission, you'll have finished the subject long ago!
