Human Rights In Cuba? |
What rights are the citizens of Cuba actually entitled to? I know that they are one of the countries with th lowest amount of human rights, but what DO they have the right to? I'm talking about things like education, health care, pensions, benefits, freedom of religion, freedom to speak and so on... I've looked around a bit on the web, but all I usually get is how their rights and such are constantly violated and exploited. One of the main reasons Cubans are oppressed is the US embargo. That prevents the masses from having access to information about the rest of the world and from knowing what they might be able to do to protest their government. The only rights they have are the ones the government gives them. All communist countries had constitutions protecting the same basic rights that we recognize here. The problem isn't what the laws say - the problem is that the laws are meaningless, nothing but decoration. If the police come to arrest you, you cannot defend yourself with the law. And assuming that you're ever granted a trial, the fact that the law supports you will be of no help - the judge will order you gagged if you insist on defending yourself. Usually, no lawyer will be made available to defend you, and if one is he will only help you plead guilty. If you try to plead innocent you'll be punished until you change your mind. |
