Will I be able to get into law school? |
So I've been reading some profiles of entering classes at schools like Columbia and NYU and I'm becoming pretty discouraged. I'm completing a double degree at Boston Univeristy in Piano Performance and Music education (I'd like to practice Intellectual property law/entertainment law)--which is how music ties in. I have a 3.48 GPA with one more semester to go. I haven't taken the LSAT yet (I plan on taking a year off, studying with Kaplan to improve my score, then taking it). Will admissions officers understand my low GPA in relationship to my double major. BU has a history of deflation (yes, deflation, meaning they give lower grades than deserved), but I'm not sure the admissions officers will know that. What should I do to improve my chances of getting into the schools The only reason I'm choosing the schools is because they both have highly regarded entertainment law programs. I'm really doubting myself here. Please help!!! Any advice is appreciated!!! You are doing well. But you have a weakness--an important, but fixable one. (BTW, though it's not law, I'm a grad student at a university tat is top-tier like NYU and Columbia. It is far too early to feel defeated. Law school admission depends on many factors, including your GPA, LSAT and the essay you write in support of your application. In that essay, don't talk about grade deflation, talk about passion. Passion for the law, for music, and how you will be able to protect our valuable art and artists with what you learn at those fine schools. Score high on the LSAT, and you will probably be admitted. Also, the reverse is true. Score low, look for a night school. Either way, go for it. No school guarantees success as a lawyer. It will depend on you LSAT grade and how many people, more qualified than you, apply when you apply. I would not give up, keep working hard and try. Only NYU and Columbia can tell you. Go to lsac.org to find out your odds. There are many factors. One thing I just did not think about when applying to law school was whether the schools I applied to had a curve, whether they had a good appeals process for students who did not meet the g.p.a requirements, even where was the law bookstore located (if they have one),etc. You should also think about how will you pay for law school. The average tuition is $30, 000 a year. How will you eat, buy books, where will you live. Don't limit yourself to those two schools in fact you may even consider your current university. Talk to the admissions officer at your university they may be your best resource. |
