After a split is there a time limit for filing a claim for child support or other possessional claims?

Can anyone tell me if there is a time limit for claiming child support or other claims? My friend was living common law with his partner for 10 years. They had a child but have been split for 17 years now. Their daughter is now twenty and is attending post secondary education. He has to date paid for more than 1/2 of this post sec. ed. and has paid continuously throughout her childhood and teen years for whatever she needed or her mother asked for. The Mother has now married and is just now, 17 years after the fact, going after my friend for child support...and worse...BACK child support. She wants the whole 17 years even though there was nothing legal drawn up previously but there was a standing agreement between them.
She originally also wanted the house and spousal support. My friends wage has changed significantly over 17 years. Can she really do this? He has a lawyer who seems useless and is not advising him in how to win this battle. Besides get a new lawyer what can he do?

Show the receipts to the court of everything he's paid for regarding the child..he does have them I hope. Checks money orders whatever, if he doesn't have anything he will most likely have to pay.EDIT: The child's not a minor anymore, so the child would have to take dad to court, but the law varies from place to place.
