To those who oppose sex education, can you explain this?

Particularly if you oppose abortion AND sex education... I'm looking at you Christian Righties...

It's pretty much a given that having a more informed person leads to less careless or unprotected sex, which leads to less pregnancy and hence less abortion -- those are such obvious connections and statistics that nobody can really argue them.

The position of most conservatives who oppose sex education in schools is that they feel it is not something the school should be discussing -- because they consider anything related to sex a moral, hence religious, issue.

Therefore, while they don't think sex education is bad -- they want it conducted by parents or by the church -- so that the "right" message can be sent -- which to many of them, means teaching abstinence only.

The statistical fact is that knowing about birth control doesn't change the percentage of people who have sex -- it just changes the percentage of people who have protected sex. But that fact doesn't enter into the moral equation for many individuals, who believe that it is immoral to even allow for the possibility of pre-marital sex. Therefore, they don't feel it is appropriate for schools or other govt officials to get involved in what they consider a religious matter.

Note -- I don't agree with them. That's just what I've heard them say.
