Arguments for paying for our education?

In school i need to argue against someone, they are saying that education should be free for everyone and i need to argue against him.

What good points are there that i could mention?

Sorry, i didn't make it very clear,
I need points as to why we should pay for our education

Your position is that everyone should get the best education that they can afford, no more and no less?

OK, well here are some strategies, but don't expect them to be pretty ones.

One of the founding principles of our country is that an educated citizen is a valued citizen, and that it is to the country's benefit to invest in education in order to assure a strong Republic everywhere.

Also, that we should do all we can to avoid the class system of the UK, form which we fought for independence.

These are the arguments your opponent will make.

So, if you want to argue against them, you could chip away at the suppositions - that a strong republic requires educated citizens - many African nations and others such as Cuba and China have strong, stable governments without having educated populations.

You might say that the value of the investment is not worth it - that it is better to have lower educated citizens to do the low quality, low value added work that Americans are so well known for around the world. Oh wait - that is everyone BUT the Americans. Well, you can make it work in your favor somehow.

You could argue that class and caste based systems are preferable to classless societies in today's world. You could point towards the modern UK and India as examples of world leaders to be emulated.

Or you could simply argue that the less educated will be taken care of by the largesses of the better educated, and that suppressing them politically while managing to keep them alive and functional is not a difficult or even onerous task.

do you mean, university? well firstly it is paid for partially by the gvt. and it is important to learn how to pay your way and take responcability

Tell them to go to a communist or socialist country. While this country remains democratic, we'll have to pay for our stuff!

The more educated the population is, the better it is for all of society.

WOW! Good luck with that one.. I can't think of one good reason that education shouldn't be free for ALL Citizens or Legal Immigrants, unless you are talking about college

1) Education (especially Higher Education ie University upwards) gives you the chance to earn more money. As it is an investment for you, you should put something in to start with

2) It should only be free to those that couldn't afford to pay for it, those that can pay for it should have to cover the cost. In other words, charge high fees, but give grants so that the high fees don't prevent underprivileged students attending

3) If education is free, not enough money is put into the education system and so the quality is lower. To ensure high quality education we need to maximise the money institutions get - the best way is by making people contribute alongside significant government funding

Good luck!

You could mention the following:

1. Education can not be payed for by the individual, as those recieving it are too young to pay for it.

2. Education benefits everyone, even those not receiving it, by reducing crime.

3. Education benefits everyone, even those not receiving it, by creating a larger work force, and more people to spread the tax burden to.

5. Education benefits everyone, even those not receiving it, by giving the opportunity for innovation in many areas that increase public quality of life, including but not limited to, medicine.

Free education creates a lack of competition in the education system. This lack leads to deterioration in the quality of education. Furthermore, if students are paying or working for their education they are more likely to try because it was their choice and they would be wasting their money if they didn't try. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.... that applies to this a little

There is no such thing as free anything in this world, least of all education.

Apparently the Scotish Parliament have decided to pay the fees of all students in Scotland.

Problem is that many folk here in England think it is actually they who are paying the fees and not the folk of Scotland. Could be some truth in that argument but it's not one I want to pursue.

As a Socialist, I entirely support the idea of not just free education for all, but free healthcare including free prescriptions.

In tha land of my fathers, Wales, they already have free prescriptions.

Can't say I blame them and being a Celt I really don't give a damn who pays the bill so long as it's not me.

If you are talking about schools you could argue that in private schools where parents pay for their childrens education class sizes are normally half that of Government schools, thereby ensuring each student receives a more personalised education. The teachers have more time to explain problems to a student if they don't understand something.

The parents normally have more input into the school activities, they communicate on a personal level with the teachers and head.

There are more varied extra curricular activities which makes for a more 'rounded' education. i.e dancing, horse riding, visits to the theatre, learning a musical instrument, foreign trips etc.

Discipline is normally observed more in a private school than a government school, possibly because they are smaller but also because students are encouraged to respect each other and the teachers, to follow a set routine and to abide by the school rules. A disciplined child turns into a well organised and disciplined adult, less likely to commit a serious crime.

The main argument you could use it that taking a child out of the state sector means more money to spend on the students that are in it.

Good luck in your debate.
