If there was an electoral poll. Will you vote on making changes to the education system?

I would vote to make it a requirement to earn a certain number of college credits after high school graduation. Nessesary subjects: Psychology, Ethics, and Awareness.

The reason why this WILL NOT happen is simply because the state would have to pay for it AND because when you finish high school you're already 18, or nearing 18, and parents have no control of stuents. Making it hard on the state to keep students in line by having to legislate new education laws. What do you think? Elaborate.

I would vote to have ethics added to the public school curriculum and included from pre-k through high school. Ethics, by the way, does not have to be religious in nature. It is unfortunate, but it is unlikely for "the state" to ever decide on such a course of study or on what it should and should not include. Too many believe there is no way to define ethics without using the definitions from some theology.

A survey course of "Religions in America" and one of "Religions of the World" would also be suitable for high school level students, but there again, the likelyhood is slim that such courses would be accepted by a society as religiously prejudiced as ours.

As far as education past high school, I think every citizen of this country should be required to spend 2 years in public service. This would not have to be military service, though it could be, and the "branch" of service could be chosen by each individual depending on availablity. These jobs would be those our government (we the taxpayers) are already paying for, such as litter pickup, and could extend to social services also. These jobs would make every citizen more aware of what it takes to actually keep this country running. This would require a constitutional ammendment and is unlikely because I'm sure the ACLU would fight it because it is every person's right to be lazy and refuse to contribute.

I believe I've overanswered yet another question.

one or two years earlier you can just add something to HS curriculum if you desire.

absolutely ! I would clean up the lies in american history !! No foreigners would ever be allowed to write our school books either !!

If you're trying to teach people those things at 18, you're too late.

You'd have to teach people as children to be more ethical, or to take concern in global matters. By the time kids are in middle school they already have cemented most of their beliefs, not counting the occasional large change.

I'd vote for no welfare money without a course on child rearing. Something to teach the basics of "home parenting". Not only changing diapers, but learning how parents affect their children. Teaching them the consequences to their kids of their actions.
No child will excel is another matter.

I think we first need to focus on making sure our high school graduates have actually received a high school education. There are many public high schools that award diplomas to 18 year olds with the literacy skills of a nine year old. These kids aren't stupid, they just were never challenged enough or taught what they needed to know. I live in CT, and the contrast between Hartford's public schools and those in my area is unbelievable. Local community colleges offer remedial classes as low as elementary school level, and they fill up every single semester, mostly with students from Hartford. Since those classes don't count as college credit, those placed at that level have to pay for two years of remedial classes before they can start working towards their degree.

Also this would be unconstitutional...forcing people to take subjects they are not interested in....I have news for you...soem of the biggest crooks in history took ethics or psychology in college. Cost would be a big issue...would you be willing to pay the increased taxes to educate even those who would not pas the class? Would you be willing to further educate the people who have no diploma or ged just to qualify tot ake the class and then fail it?

It is time the public schools had some authority to do something except just be the scape goat because children have never been taught any respect at home, won't cooperate in school and are just there for the teachers to babysit because the law says the school has to keep the children.
