Is it wrong to mix religion and education?

Is it wrong to mix religion and education?

If it is, then shouldn't Christians be exempt from having to pay taxes for education?

Since that isn't going to happen what harm is there in teaching Christianity and Judism where the schools are teaching Islam? There isn't any if you do it in an unbiased way, letting the student make up their own mind.

I personally don't think it is. A lot of our modern day laws come from religion.

I do believe that religion shouldn't be forced down a kids throat by the school system either.

If a kid wasn't to pray in school as long as it silent there shouldn't be any disiplinary repercusions.

Our society was formed and based on religion. People tend to forget this fact. We left other countries so we could have religous freedom. So to answer in brevity there would be no education without religion. and vice verse

It's better not to mix religion with science.
When you are doing your job, you have to think in a scientific way. We do not need to do everything and think in such a way all the time. So religions come to help.
The main aim of education is to train people to think and practise in a scientific way.
So it is not a good idea to mix religion with education.

Yes, there should always be a separation of state and religion especially in formative years when children are malable. For one fact, which religious teaching should the school use? Christianity? We must face the fact that there are multitude of religion and to placate every aspect of it will overwhelm the school. How many different classes are needed to acoomodate every religion? Judaism, Buddhist, Shinto, Hinduism, Sikhism, Zorotarism, any many more. Will Jehovah's Witness and other form of non accepted religious denomination also be left out? Another food for thought how far whould such lessons go? Are students required to know each faith in depth, should students undergo conversion or be allowed to convert if they find another religion more forthcoming? People should have the freedom to choose and practice their religion but formalized training in their tenets should always be avoided outside the home or community much more a secular public institution such as a school. Religion is not wrong but reconciling it to a general public is hard to do. Besides mixing science and religion is impossible, whereas one is more objective the other is more an article of faith.

Of COURSE its wrong.Religion is a plague on man kind.

Wrong or right, good or bad. There might be a time and place to mix religion and education, but I do not think that most of the classes in the public school system is the right place.

Rather than being afraid of studying religion in schools, communities should embrace comparative religion classes (i.e. at the high school level). Ignorance of other cultures, faiths, etc. breeds ignorance, ergo a better understanding of that which is "different" might actually lead to some tolerance of other faiths.

No. We do it in Ontario (Canada in case you don't know where this is ;-))

In Ontario we have two school boards. A Public school board, and a Catholic school board. The only difference between them is that there is a religious studies class. In this class kids learn the things for "first communion", "catecysm". The schools are tied to specific parishes. Mainly only children from Catholic families go to these schools, but some Protestants and non Christians go. They are not required to attend the religious studies.

And some Catholics attend public schools. Those that do, learn the religious aspects in Church. In public schools, there is no "religious studies". I attended public schools, and we did say the Lord's Prayer, however those who took exception to this, left the room until the prayer was finished.

Municipal taxes are directed to the school board of your choice.
