What are some ways to prevent rape (programs, education, ect.) and what has been tried?Sorry girl... As horrible as this will sound... There is absolutely no way to "prevent" rape. Rape is an action derived from many mental problems, dominance and power to a way of defilement and sadism for instance. These are psychological problems that can not be corrected on a large or small scale due to the fact the every one is different. If we were all equally matched physically with the exact skills. Unfortunately there isn't anything that can be done to prevent.... You can help make people aware on how to protect yourselves and how to recognize unsafe situations(such as in date rape cases) and that is the only thing that could eventually lower the sex crime statistics. I guess in a nut shell... if you cant prevent...prepare. Defense Training, carry a KNIFE Do you mean for a potential victim to stop an attacker, or, more broadly, to lower the instances of people attempting to rape? Stay in groups when you go out. Don't just go home with random guys unless sex is your intent. When you go out with someone you don't know that well, have your cell and have someone check in with you once in awhile. Text them and tell them where you are. tougher sentences for the people that rape should be death penalty maybe then that would stop more Through a Rapist's Eyes (No Joke)
This is important information for females of ALL ages .
When this was sent to me, I was told to forward it to my lady friends, but I forwarded it to most everyone in my address book. My men friends have female friends and this information is too important to miss someone.
Please pass it along.
A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1) The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed . They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair . Women with short hair are not common targets.
2) The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who's clothing is easy to remove quickly . Many of them carry scissors around specifically to cut clothing.
3) They also look for women on their cell phone , searching through their purse, or doing other activities while walking because they are off-guard and can be easily overpowered.
4) Men are most likely to attack & rape in the early morning, between 5: 00a.m. and 8:30a.m.
5) The number one place women are abducted from/attacked is grocery store parking lots. Number two: is office parking lots/garages. Number three: is public restrooms.
6) The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don't have to worry about getting caught.
7) Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.
8) If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9) These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.
10) Several defense mechanisms he taught us are: If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: "I can't believe it is so cold out here," "we're in for a bad winter." Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a line-up; you lose appeal as a target.
11) If someone is coming toward you , hold out your hands in front of you and yell STOP or STAY BACK ! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
12) If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes) , yell I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent. Well as I always said easy access clothing means easy access also do not go out alone at night especially while directing.
Also it is considered bad to say this but cover up a little bit if you are showing everything off you will attract the type willing to rape you, plus it makes my life easier. karate chop I find a whistle or a rape alarm works wonders.
Also, because it will not injure the attacker, you can not be arrested and charged with assault for resisting the rape. Teach more women proper, tough self defence - I take it you were talking about women?
There are classes called "animal classes" out there, where you learn to use anything around you to defend yourself and inflict the most pain possible.
When I first started training, I got a bit silly for a while, and willed someone to try it on, just so I could give them what for! Now, I feel much more confident that I would at least struggle enough and cause them enough discomfort that they would change their minds.
It should be taught in schools. stop parolling convicted rapists. in fact....their sentences are too easy as it is, and a conviction in ONE state is NOT held as a repeat sexual offender if they rape in an adjoining state!! This itself is a crime.
We have been trying to educate women (and men) to protect themselves from rape for the last 20+ years, and the crime is only getting MORE violent.
Too many of the rapists are getting off on technicallities, or when lawyers are striking deals during the sentencing process and avoiding trial altogether. Stiffer penalties need to be enforced.
jmo good to have basic self-defense skills.a) Hit them in the groin really hard and then get away or finish them off on the ground by stomping on their head.b) Generally any object can be used for yself defense - keys for thrusting in the eyeball or under chin. some grooming tools like ceasars and such could be very dangerous too. So use them carefully. You don't have to kill your attacker, just disable him. That will usually give you enough time to get help or get away etc. c) Stay away from people who arouse your suspicion. Better prevent any incidents then keep going until the critical point of no return. Go to www.letswrap.com &Tori Amis has a site www.rain.com
I think or www.rain.org if you live in MA there is HAWK help for abused women and children and you should call your court house and ask what services are available for prevention, education and/or counseling advocacy. First of all, are you talking about in the United States, or elswehere? In some societies, in the extreme, there has been castration of men convicted of that crime in order to prevent them from committing it again. Also captial punishment.
I understand that there are programs in some prison systems in the US, also programs at a number of universities to educate men, especially at campuses where there has been a problem with date rape.
Other measures include stepping up security measures. At a university that I attended, coeds can request that a campus security guard accompany them to their cars in the parking lot or elsewhere if they have to go somewhere on campus alone. Also, there have been discussions about locking and watching the entrances and exits of the girl's dorms and monitoring who is coming in and out, things of that nature.
There has also been a proliferation of women's self-defense courses, and the encouragement of women to go places in groups or with someone else instead of traveling alone.
Also the distribution of pamphlets and brochures to alert women to the dangers of accepting drinks from strangers, drinks that the stranger might have slipped Rohypnol or GHB or a similar date rape drug into. And other types of high-risk behavior. The best way to prevent rape is to not make yourself a victim. Don't go places alone. Stay away from strangers. Don't date people that you do not know well. If the person you go out with is new to you talk to their friends first. Get guards to walk you to your car. Be aware of your surroundings when you are alone. Don't let yourself get out of control (drinking, drugs). Don't dress provocatively at work school or when going out to public places like bars. That sounds like everywhere but yes, it is.
Rule of thumb, don't act like a victim and you won't be. wear clothes and not go out and do stupid stuff I am wondering where Piphop's information came from. All of the studies that I have seen say that the vast majority of rapes and all other serious crimes are planned well in advance. When Piphop says that these sickos go looking for a woman with a ponytail, that makes it sound like the minute they see a woman with that particular hairstyle, they go for her, while nothing is further from the truth. In the vast majority of rapes, the victim and the perpetrator are known to each other. And the rape itself is a highly pre-meditated act that has been gone over in the rapist's sick mind many, many times before he actually commits the act itself.
What can be done to prevent this? Anything that trips up the rapist's plans. Unfortunately, we are all creatures of habit. We go to work at the same time every day, or we leave for school at the same time, and we go by the same route every time.
To the extent that you can, vary your schedule, and definitely vary the route that you take to and from work and school.Definitely see to it that nobody can count on catching you alone at a certain place at a certain time.Piphop mentioned abductions from parking lots.Whenever a woman is abducted from a parking lot, most likely somehow the act itself was unseen by other people. Therefore,do not park your vehicle in a spot where it is blocked by other vehicles or a building or something where other people cannot see your vehicle or what is taking place around it.
Since around 97% of rapes are planned, the best way to prevent them is to be as unpredictable as you can.
As for the way that women dress:Mini-skirts and other items of apparel are not the reason that women are raped.
Hairstyles are not the reason that women are raped.
There were rapes long before the mini-skirt ever appeared on the fashion scene, as well as any other fashion item.
Women are raped because there are a lot of sick men out there, And until something is done to seriously upgrade the mental health situation here and around the world, the only way to prevent it is to trip up any plans the rapist might make.
As for self-defense courses, by all means take them, but what is most important is for you to realize that the best defense is simply not to be in that situation at all.Something that works well in a well-lighted gym in a co-operative situation with a paid instructor might not work as well in the dark where you can hardly see your attacker, and he definitely is not going to co-operate with any self-defense moves you might want to make.Add to that the fact that he will have the advantage of strength and the element of surprise and unfortunately you might find that fighting off a psychopath is easier said than done.
It is much better not to allow yourself to be in the predicament in the first place, and that is achieved by varying the where and the when of your various activities so that he can't plan on catching you alone somewhere. |
