Doctor May expressed a wish to uplift Hugh through education, but he stopped himself short by stating what he

eassy about (Life in the Iron mills)

Dr. May with his knowledge of anatomy was impressed that Hugh had caught a certain essence of the female form in this crude sculpture (maybe an unconscious feeling about Deb?). The visitors discussed the meanings of what the statue represented; Mitchell confidently dipped into philosophy to render an interpretation and just as easily reached into psychology to challenge Dr. May to further educate Hugh concerning depicting the human form correctly. The Doctor recognized that it would take money, time and effort - and he didn't have those for this student. Dr. May did offer encouraging and inspiring words to Hugh. Essentially May questioned himself as to why should he bother to offer practical help to lift up one of these poor unfortunate souls when there would still be so many left downtrodden. If Hugh was going to raise himself up then he would have to do it by himself. For certain, the arrogant elitist Mitchell and profit-minded Kirby wanted no part of it.

... and when people die for our nation, we used to take the land and make life better for the inhabitants. Iraq should become the 51st state in our nation. We can help the Iraqi's with economic development. We can have a very strategic place in the world for the protection of our nation as well as the world. We would solve the energy needs of the industrialized nations for many years to come. And one last thing, we won't be stranding our soldiers as the Congress and President seem to be doing. I'm too sure about Dr. May.....
