Can my highschool do this or is it illegal?? |
My boyfriend (Who turned 17 on Feb. 13th) goes to the same highschool as me and he's a junior and I'm a sophomore..Lately, he's been really, really, really sick (sence Jan. 25th so he hasn't been to school sence..) and the other day, he was making an effort going back to school again to get an education (sence everyone has a right to an education, right?) and the vice principal comes over to us at school breakfast and says after he's done eating he needs to leave because, the school dropped him out and his mom called the regional school district and they said he can sign papers sence hes 17 and the vice principal said you need to be 18..He wants an education so, can't he sue the school for denying him the right to an education? Please help.. He was dropped out from the school (He didn't drop out himself) because he hasn't been there for a longgg time and he has 2 doctors notes..so, yeah..stupid why they dropped him out. I had a friend who was in kind of the same situation. Keep in mind, I live in Georgia. She was 16 and was not going to school, not because of sick related activities, just because she wasn't going. They kicked her out, which app. she didn't want to be there in the first place. When she tried to go back they denied her. I think it is absolutely wrong though, in your boyfriends' case, because of the fact that he was sick and does have doctor's notices. You need to go to a higher source, maybe your local board of education. Wish I could give you more info. Good luck and I hope that your boyfriend will be able to continue his education! Why was he dropped out of school the first place? Really need to know the state & county to provide an answer. A lot of states have rules that require the school district to send a tutor out to the home if the student is too sick to attend; the 16, 17 & 18 year old "signing papers" thing varies from state to state, as well. The school can do that, unless he has caught up on the work he needs to have done. The school can't teach him all the stuff that he missed because that would be unfair for the students and the teachers, so he either has to get a tutor or retake that grade. Its sounds to me you are leaving something out or maybe he didn't tell you something. The school wouldn't just drop someone out for no reason then they would get sued. the school is not right I am not sure if he can sue them or not based on the information you have provided. Do you know the actual reason he was removed from the school? I know most states require a certain number of days attendance in order to receive credit for the semester and he may already have exceeded the maximum number of days he could miss in order to be able to do that. yes they can dont ask me how , but it did happen to me in the same state differant town (canton) but yes i was sick for almost 2 months and i got automaticaly dropped out and i was told to not come back till next year and funn this happened in febuary and i came back at the beginning of april and i was asked to leave and had to come back the next year |
