Lego Lunacy? What do you demand from your board of Ed?

Increasing the quality of education is free.
No amount of money poured into education is going to help until control of the schools is taken back from the students and turned back over to the faculty.
The faculty, encouraged by its union, has surrendered their responsibility for discipline and turned the classroom into a democracy.
It won't work.
Children have a right to an education. That's it. Their rights end there.
They have no right to privacy in their lockers full of contraband, weapons, drugs and evidence to other crimes.
The administration should go to the locker armed with nothing more than a bolt cutter not a warrant or a plea for permission from the student.
They have no right to come and go as they please.
They have a right to learn history, not re-write it.
They have a right to learn the mechanics of mathematics, not be allowed to alter the formulas to affect out-comes based on socialist agendas and rewarded with a diploma for creativity.

They have a right to learn civics. What ever happened to that subject? Based on the misinformation I see here, it no longer exists?
What will you demand from your board of education? Learning or mollycoddling?

LOL, someone is on an irate tear. I take it that you are referring to public junior and senior high schools in America?

It has been quite awhile since I attended one ... but it seems almost like yesterday. I spent 2 years in public high school in CT after 2 years at an American Department of Defense high school, at R.A.F. Lakenheath, England. I was amazed at the liberties that "civilian" kids had ... smoking in the boys/girls lavatories ... even occasionally skipping class. We would never dare do that in D.O.D. schools.

Kids will be kids. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. Is there even anything like a hall pass these days? I don't know.

Blame the parents for the current problems. If I ever dared to get extremely out of line with a teacher (which I never did) my parents would have thanked the teacher who belted me.

I enjoyed going to school and learning. I loved playing sports also. It was cool and the teachers were (for the most part) cool also.

America hasn't gone to hell in a basket yet. There are plenty of bright, creative kids who will become excellent future leaders of America. Every generation goes through this. They're just different from the previous generations.

I do like the requirement that some states have for passing an exam to attain a high school diploma. I've seen the exam for the State of Florida and am very certain that I could have passed that after 6th grade ... maybe younger ... and I'm far from a genius. The exam is far from difficult. Maybe the bell-shaped curve in America has shifted way to the left? Maybe not everyone is capable of earning a high school diploma? Should we keep lowering the standard? I don't think so.

Don't dispare ... it's the same as it ever was ... but different.

Cheer up.

Here is something you might be interested in. We did a student survey at our school. One of the questions was "Do you think that students are well behaved?" 8.6% of our students said yes. Countywide only 24.6% and that is coming from our students. It is sad. I have worked at a high school for 18 years and every year the student behavior gets worse but who do we blame? The students? The parents? The administrators? I think everyone needs to take some responsibility and let the students know that education is a gift so that they can succeed in life, not a jail sentence.
