Justify this...please?

The Higher Education Act contains a provision (among others) that denies convicted drug offenders federal aid for higher education and government student loans, even if they have reformed. Murders and rapist can get this aid. Justify this, Please?

I don't have a real answer that can justify this but the sarcastic side can not resist weighing in (so consider yourself warned, if you offend easily or do not have a sense of humour - don't read any further .... no really stop now)

the powers that be must be assuming the drug offenders have just killed too many brain cells before reforming to make it worth them going to school - those powers that be are really just protecting the drug offenders from disappointment and failure of not being able to be successful in the realm of higher education

there is no justification

It isn't fair. I myself will NOT try to justify this. BUT I will say this. Once a person has served his/her sentence then he/she should not be discriminated against for any reason. If a person is given a punishment for a crime and they do the time or serve their punishment then why should he/she be stopped from doing anything within reason.

Outrageous.

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit in federal court to overturn the ban on student loans to those with a previous drug conviction.

Liberals and their "hug-a-thug" programs. I've been a correctional officer for 24 years, and will probably have to work another 20 to get my 4 kids through college, the good news...3 down, 1 to go. Fortunately, I no longer have to witness New York States' convicts getting their college degrees. Pataki took it from them, but who knows with our new Governor??

There isn't justification for it. I don't think either person should get an education.

There is no justification and quiet frankly that is shocking to hear. I (being the liberal taht i am) have always been of the mind set that convicted felons dont need to be punished but bettered as a person. Face it,. 85% of criminials are repeat offenders. Punishing them is not working, its just making it impossible to get back into society. We should just ship them off to some island where they can all go do w/ever they wanna do when they wanna do it and it wouldn't harm the rest of society.

First of all NO CONVICTED FELON can receive any financial aid. This means all major criminals.

Second, most drug addicts would be a waste of taxpayers' money since theie intelligence is diminished severely.
