The legality of Pharmacutical sponsored CMEs?

I worked in a major corporate family medicine clinic a few years ago, this has been bothering me

The primary function of my job was arranging monies for "Continuing Medical Education".

The thing is that most major events at the clinic were paid for by the pharmaceutical companies (everything!). These CME vacations looked pretty elaborate from the brochures they sent...and seemed they had little to do with education.

I was pretty open with my disgust about the practice, especially after I found a bunch of post it notes (from the previous secretary) stuck to a dictaphone with random numbers all over them...I asked my supervisor what it was and she refused to tell me...now my theory is they were keeping track of scripts written. My job was posted on their site the next day. They didn't like me for other reasons as well (Didn't dress nice enough, wasn't outgoing enough they said).

My question--Is this practice legal? Did I make the right call by walking off?I lost everything

The thing that made me think it was illegal was that I wasn't allowed to save any communications with the Pharmaceuticals on the network...I got in big trouble when I saved a thank you letter to Eli Lily on there.

It's not illegal. It might be a gray area sometimes or of questionable ethics, but it is common. It's marketing.

This is not illegal in any jurisdiction that I know of. Have you looked up the relevant law? It should just be a matter of going to the website of whatever local government regulates medical ethics where you worked and read the law. Laws aren't generally hidden from the public -- this would make them very hard to follow.
