What do you think of this idea for reparations...?

i don't know if this was in only my county, state, or if it was nationwide but recently a governmental body has allowed all adopted children to attend state-supported colleges and receive free tuition. examples would be UNC, NC State, etc. so my friend who was adopted at age 12 (now 22) is now starting off at the local CC and will transfer to a major university. i beleive this would be a great idea for repartations for african americans. so that those who get good grades in high school or have a desire to actively pursue higher education could get it. this way the repartations would truly serve a purpose, the government would not just be handing out money to blacks, and, most importantly, individuals would not have to pay out of their pockets. this idea could only better our country as a whole. of course you would need to have verification of ethnicity and whatnot, but don't you think this is a very novel idea?

There will never be a "fair" reparation setup. The issue will not be resolved by either side until the cultures change. Since the problem cannot be solved, it will persist unsolved, and be read about in history classes as an after thought at some point. Both cultures are obsolete: the most common male name in England is Mohammed (or a derivitave thereof), France and Germany are nearly the same.

After the Latino/Hispanic growth here, and the low birthrate of white folks, Australia will be the only majority white country left.

I'm sorry some of my ancestors oppressed and murdered yours. I'm sorry they did that to mine, too, and took over the land here - some of which my ancestors lived on. I'm sorry my ancestors fought each other on both sides of the civil war. I'm sorry Hitler was allowed to exist, and murder other ancestors of mine. I'm sorry the communists starved others during the revolution. That's all you get from me besides my "tax money" which mostly goes to killing people in Iraq. Sorry about that too. I think higher education should be free for anyone who wants it, not any one specific race.

Reparations are a dumb idea no matter how you try and spice it up. Why should people today have to pay for about less then 2% of the people in the past that owned slaves. The truth is blacks in the US today are much better off then if their ancestors were not brought here from africa

Why do you believe that reparations are necessary?

What about us white people that were adopted. I had to pay my own way. (dont give me this crap about it was easy) I worked hard and applied myself and got an education. There is no reason that everyone else cant do it. NO FREE RIDES!

Sort of like since their parents did not care for them society must. If I can't afford to send my kids to college who will pay for them to go.
No one is entitled to reparations for something that happened over 150 or 200 years ago. 400,000 Men died to free the slaves. Who is going to pay reparations to their descendents?
My ancestors were not in the US at the time of slavery and fled Europe to avoid starvation or death. What do we owe the whiners who are crying for reparations because they can't cut it on their own.? I worked my way through college working two jobs. Who owes me anything?

I think that is a very foolish idea.

For one, any and ALL peoples who were enslaved are dead. ... and unless you can bring them back to life so THEY can enjoy some of the finer things in life that they were denied, such reparations would go to persons who have NEVER been enslaved.

My father was black (that's what he was called when he served in a segregated unit in WWII). To the day he died, he worked hard for what he got, and tried to teach his kids to get off their butts and work for what you want in life.

Anyone who's pushing for "reparations" for today's blacks is just full of $hit.... and/or just looking for a handout.

FYI: I worked hard or my good grades all through my school years... and even when I got to college. I did not list my "race" when applying because I preferred to get where I'm going based on my performance... not some lame handout.

Reparations if bad idea for African Americans and here is why:
1. Slavery ended in 1864 therefore no one who was a slave was around anymore they are all dead.
2. We had a small war that ended it. So for the familes of the North that fought to end it and those who die running the underground railroad haven't gotten a dime so what about those people.
3. Should we deduct all the welfare money they already have gotten while they suck off the backs of others who been working.
4. Why should anyone's family wasn't here when slavery was going on pay for any kind of reparationis?

My suggestion for reparations is this:
Anyone who wants them gets 1 check for $100,000 and one way ticket to the African country of their choice when they land their US citizenship is revoke and never to be reinstated.

Are you speaking only of aa people or are you also speaking of na people as well?... you should sit down and do a comparison of the two based on poverty and education...

Why do you deserve reperations? Were you yourself a slave? Do you know who owned you if you were a slave? If not, you get no such reperations. This is the type of thinking that keeps racism alive and well in our country. You should join up with Jesse "I am better than you cause I'm black" Jackson and Al "Black Power" Sharpton to promote a biggoted society.

There isn't a black alive today that was a slave or a direct dependant of a slave. Affirmitive action and minority scholarships have been around for decades. There is a way for those who want it, but cannot pay...student loans.

First, there is no such thing as african American, you are either an American or you are not. Do not insult yourselves and this country, by sticking another name in front of American. As for reparations, how long were YOU a slave? Never. Slavery ended over 140 years ago. Stop sitting on your butt and demanding that someone else pay your way.
I think that anyone who earns good grades in school should have the right to go to college, but if you do not have the grades, you do not deserve to take up space that someone who has a chance, because they worked for it, could use. Grow up and earn your own way in life.

How do we address the descendants of all the blacks from whom the slaves were originally purchased.

Do we require that all blacks prove that their ancestors in Africa did not participate in capturing other local tribes and selling them to Europeans, Orientals and still to this day Middle Eastern countries?

If it is found that an African-American benefited from his ancestors capturing and selling their fellow countrymen, should that person then be punished instead of offered reparations?

What about the blacks who do not have ancestors from Africa and moved to America within the last 100 years or so?

Historical footnote: The Civil War was not, repeat not, a war to free slaves. It was a war that addressed states rights. The slaves were freed by Lincoln only as a requirement put forth by France to provide its military support to the North.

i always thought this could be a good way to pay reparations. it is also advantageous to the gov't . Go OBOMA
