Help! I need to write some job applications for an ex-con?

....who has had no experience in legitimate work (he was in prison for selling drugs), has little education....but is good with his hands, and REALLY wants to get his life sorted. How can I help him write a convincing application letter generally?!

He needs to start at the bottom and prove himself to be trustworthy and dependable. Any entry level job will do. He should finish his education and get a GED. He needs to show up clean, properly attired, sober, rested and anxious to do a good job. He will need to do this every work day, including Mondays and the day after pay day.

An application letter should be just plain talk. He should be straightforward and explain his situation. The tone should be honest and contrite. Finally, it should end with great thanks for taking the time, blah, blah, blah and express that he is not expecting much nor feel he deserves much but is just seeking a opportunity to prove himself to be a useful member of society.

He should just go applying for jobs where his conviction won't be a problem. A manufacturing facility that does drug testing anyway could be a good start.

An employer does not want an application letter written by someone else. If you are thinking of writing a letter for him that he will send as if it were his own, this is a very bad idea, as it gives the employer a completely false impression of who this man is.

He should apply in person for jobs he is qualified for. If he needs help filling out an application, he can ask to take one with him to be completed and returned promptly.

If you want to write a recommendation letter that he can submit to prospective employers, with your own name on it, that's a different thing altogether. That letter should state how long you have known the man, how you know that he is rehabilitated, what you know he is doing now to maintain a sober life, what personal qualities make him a good employee, and what specific skills he has that fit the job.

Good question! not going to be and-easy task no matter how good he is with his hands and since the laws differ very widely from the UK to the US,u-r-going to have a very hard time convincing employers to hire him especially when they check his criminal background and that will not be pretty.
Listen all u can do is be open and with the application because lying is not going to get u anywhere n it should be him doing it not u for one thing,so just be honest because if u lie to these prospective and they will check his back ground u-r-just defeating ur purpose and that is to start on a road to a new life one for the better.
