Affirmative Action programs. Outrageous!?

What's up with Affirmative Action?

So, here's the deal:

A First Nations student will be chosen over me, even if I have better credentials, for access to University.

This is based on the false pretense that all Natives are "disadvantaged", as so described in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Does the Charter automatically assume that First Nations are of low intelligence?

They have access to the same educational resources as me. They are taught the same, government-authorized curriculum as me. They go to the same schools as me.

Although my family might be better off financially, that doesn't have any affect on education!

Now, take, for example.... MEDICAL SCHOOL.

A First Nations person gets into medecine with lower scores than a person of European ancestry.

Oh, what is this? Lowering the standard of our Medical Staffs to cater to a minority? Putting lives at risk so that we can have more Natives on staff?

Should it be done away with?

Affirmative action should be done away with entirely. It's reverse discrimination. I didn't realize they had it in Canada too. Did you see the question about Canada becoming the 51st state?

Yes affirmative action should be terminated. I never have believed in affirmative action. It is wrong and unfair.

Strange that we would have the same situation here in the states. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I might think that someone is conspiring against the majorities in both our countries. I might even think that your sovereignty and mine are nothing more than a myth.

Yes affirmative action should be done away with.

It is not = for all people.

It gives the minority a way to not work and be lazy.

Martin Luther King Jr. and God made it possible for desegregation. Some blacks are smart and using their freedom of education. But, most as shown in the inner cities like the broncs or any big city are in to gangs, drugs and violence. The black neighborhoods are the worst in the USA.

They choose not to use their = rights even when they are given them.

Why are a lot of minority races disadvantaged? They choose to be.

Get rid of affirmative action, have it = for everyone and get rid of the excuse for being lazy.

Affirmative is discrimination in reverse. I can't believe America even has this.

WAKE UP AMERICA and look at the facts.

lets see how i can answer your question. IN fact this is perfect, b/c Affirmative Action is what we're learning right now in GOV. This is actually A case called reverse-discrimination. UC Davis vs Bakke. Bakke was a white male who was a top student and entered as an undergradute to uc davis but was rejected, lower scorers and minorites got accepted so the Supreme Court said that quotas for AA's are unconstitional. ONe more thing, i truly believe that even though thats reverse drisciminating, its still the fact that minorities should get a greater access to UC systems b/c c'mon if your parents are off financially then they could put you in a private school. prop. 209 (1996) banned Affirmative Actions programs and which led to other states doing the same, and noone could challenge the precedent. so there you go.

yes. but please stop crying about the indigenious people that get to med school before you.
If you want something bad enough you'll get it.
Seeing how Europeans stole all the land..

Id numbers should replace names, that way all academic scores can be reviewed w/out bias

I would agree with your sentiments completely. I have been working for 10 years in the nursing profession, always having had the desire to work in medicine as a longterm goal. Obviously, the long-term part of the equation has been extended longer than I would like.

I wouldn't worry about 'first nations' quotas so much, but rather about the myriad other quotas they don't tell you about. Women are a prime example, and will represent the greatest special interest group you will be competing with. Currently, women make up 60% of medical school seats in programs around the world, sometimes 70+%. Much of this differential has been created through unspoken quotas.

Back to the issue of first nations though, I should point out that I have native ancestry, although not enough to be a "visible minority"... Currently there is a waiting list of two years to get your status, and despite encouragement from me, my mother kept putting off her application, so that any established ancestery, will not be helping me out anytime soon.

You're right, it's very wrong what is taking place AROUND THE WORLD in today's medical schools. White male would be the worst thing you could be when trying to follow your dreams in this regard. It's sad that Hitler's program of quotas to keep out the advantaged, (in his case specified as Jews in particular), in order to help the disadvantaged, (for Hilter, the German people), is alive and flourishing in univerzities today, under the pretext of equality.

Take the students with the highest scores without regard for gender and race and let the chips fall where they may.

My first dream of becoming a police officer died with quotas (the RCMP wouldn't even give white guys applications!) and it looks like my second dream of being a doctor has gone critical. So much for dreams.

This isn't about fairness, it's about vengence, and real people end up suffering the consequences. This society can either end quotas, or die with our dreams - choose wisely people.
