Mayor requirements?

I have a few questions about mayor. I have a freind in sterling heights michigan who is 16 years old. She wants to run for city mayor of sterling heights either this year or next year. What is the age requirement of running for city mayor of sterling heights, MI? Do you need to have a college education?

What does the sterling heights mayor do exactly? Can they make laws of the city and change areas of the city. Can they lower taxes and bring more money towards the city and can they change the cities schools in a better way. Tell me what the city mayor of sterling heights have the right to do. Also, how can you run for mayor and be elected. These questions are about being mayor of sterling heights, MI. Thanks for answering these questions.

I dont believe that you have to be a registered voter to be a mayor since a 17 year old is running for mayor. Maybe some cities their is no age requirements.

Sorry, but the City Charter of Sterling Heights requires a candidate for city council or mayor to be a registered and qualified voter. At 16, your friend is too young to be a voter, so she is also too young for office.

I couldn't find any rules or statutes on running for mayor, but I did find Sterling Heights's description of the office:

"In council-manager communities, typically the mayor presides at council meetings, serves as a spokesperson for the community, facilitates communication and understanding between elected and appointed officials, assists the council in setting goals and advocating policy decisions and serves as a promoter and defender of the community. In addition, the mayor serves as a key representative in intergovernmental relations. The mayor, council and manager constitute a policy-development and management team. "

Any registered voter (i.e., over 18) living in the city can run. But if she doesn't know the answers to your questions, she is not at all prepared for the job and probably won't win.
