Possible discrimination?

I was wondering if anyone can help me. Anyone can answer but I need a professional opinion. I am a senior at a private Christian university and have a friend whom is handicap. Apparently, the school is not going to provide a ramp for stage access during graduation and my friend will have to go across the floor. I was wondering does this fall under any discrimination laws since we our a private university? Please Help

Seeing as the university is "private", it likely receives no public funds and the ADA likely does not apply. I don't think you have a legal recourse.

There is only one reason why they are refusing to do this: Money. They don't want to pay the expense. This is where appeals to the community will come into play. Contact church and business leaders to raise funds for the ramp. Get in touch with Lowe's or Home Depot and see if they will donate materials and expertise. If your school has an engineering program, get them to build it. This solution could have a very positive unifying effect on the community.

However, if that approach fails you need to appeal to the Christianity of the university admin. Ask the administration: What does Christian love and charity tell us to do? Back up your arguments with bible verses.

You need to be respectful in this process, as "Christian" administrators tend to view themselves as having God-given authority over you. You might find yourself excluded as well.

When that fails, you need to run a public relations campaign.
Contact the local press and let them know what's going on.
Embarrass the administrator.

Circulate a petition.

Finally, if the ramp is not built, organize a protest. It could be as simple as a refusal for anyone to cross the stage. Everyone should pick up their diploma on the floor. Or, you could all refuse to attend.

Glad to hear it was resolved. Report It

I went to a private college and I'm pretty sure they HAD to have ramps and elevators everywhere.. in our coffee shop which has two steps had to close one day because they had to pix the elevator for handicap people.... and that was on campus at my private college...

Check with your lawyer because I disagree with above...I don't know of anyone who is exempt from ADA laws

No pun intended, but what standing do you have in the matter? any such negotiations are between your friend and the school, and he is under no obligation to tell you the details.

I am sure he is well aware of the services that are available to him to protect his rights. whether he wants to accept help form such godless liberals, even thought hey may be glad to provide it, depends entirely on the skill of indoctrination your college has provided against such a common sense solution!

no, private church schools are exempt from the ADA regulations.

Don't ask me why.
